316 Round Bar Stainless Steel Properties

Stainless steel 316 round bar alloy provides a versatile choice for a more lightweight means of structural support in corrosive environments. Also known as marine grade or surgical stainless steel, is commonly used in the food and pharmacy industry where it is required to minimize metallic contamination. The physical properties for 316 SS round bar include:

  • Tensile Strength, Ultimate: 79,800 psi
  • Tensile Strength, Yield: 34,800 psi
  • Elongation: 60%
  • Modulus of Elasticity: 28,000 ksi

Stainless Steel 316 Round Bar Applications

With increased corrosion resistance over stainless steel alloy 304, 316 SS round bar provides increased protection for applications with increased exposure to corrosion. The increased molybdenum content within UNS S31600 also provides a higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Applications for 316 stainless steel round bar include:

  • Food preparation equipment particularly in chloride environments
  • Laboratory benches & equipment
  • Coastal architectural paneling, railings & trim
  • Boat fittings
  • Chemical containers, including for transport
  • Heat Exchangers
  • Woven or welded screens for mining, quarrying & water filtration
  • Threaded fasteners
  • Springs

304 vs 316 Stainless Round Bar

There are several variations within the formulations of 304 and 316 stainless steel round bar that directly affect their applicable usage and what types of environments that they can survive. 316 SS round bar contains increased molybdenum content over SS 304, which allows for increased use within extremely corrosive environments. Oppositely, 304 stainless steel round bar contains less molybdenum than SS 316, so it is more commonly used in more stable and less corrosive environments.
